Mother’s day origin
Mother’s Day originated in the United States according to Baike. Anna Jarvis, a Philadelphia native, was the initiator of this festival. She never married and had no children. Anna Jarvis’s mother died on May 9, 1906, and she was very sad. On the anniversary of his mother’s death the next year, Jarvis organized an activity to remember his mother and encouraged others to express their gratitude to their mothers in a similar way.
Jarvis wrote to Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, requesting a special memorial service for her mother. Her mother served the Sunday school of this church for more than 20 years. In 1908, the church declared the second Sunday in May, the death day of Jarvis’ mother, as Mother’s Day. Jarvis also organized a Mother’s Day Committee to start large-scale publicity, calling for Mother’s Day to be a statutory holiday.
Her appeal received a warm response. On May 10, 1913, the United States Congress and the House of Representatives passed a resolution, which was signed by President Wilson and announced that the second Sunday in May of each year was Mother’s Day. This move has caused countries all over the world to follow suit. Mother’s Day had been established in 43 countries by the time Jarvis Xie Shih was born in 1948.
